Should you practice yoga? I often hear people say, “I should do yoga.” Maybe, and maybe we should eat vegetarian and run four miles a day.
My philosophy is do what works for you. Simply take small steps to feel better, happier and healthier. Yoga is more than exercise it is a way of life.
There is a whole world and variety of yoga for you. It can be gentle, physically challenging, sweaty, gymnastic, and more.
You can become more flexible, strong, internally healthy, mentally focused, coordinated, and more.
You may experience better metabolism, look taller and have improved posture. Other activities you participate in will improve as you become more flexible and strong.
I found the mat 12 years ago. I knew about it and was advised to take yoga long before that. But I was too busy golfing, playing tennis, platform tennis, and taking aerobic classes. And this was the problem. I wandered into yoga to help my aching
body not knowing how it would improve and change my life.
I enrolled in Sharyn Galindo’s yoga teacher training at her studio, North Shore Yoga in Northfield, IL. This was five
years ago, 2007. I completed the 200 hour level training which is RYT approved and am a member of
Yoga Alliance. I have been busy teaching for five years now in 2012. The education never ends for me. I have traveled to places like San Francisco, Santa Fe, and Copenhagen to take training sessions from Yoga Masters such as Desiree Rumbaugh, David
Swenson, Rodney Yee, Ana Forrest, Tias Little, Judith Lasater, Rod Stryker, John Friend, Dharma Mittra, Sean Corn, Sianna Sherman and more. I love to continue my education to bring more to my own practice, life and teaching.
In 2010 I began studying Yin Yoga with Paulie Zink, Paul and Suzie Grilley, and Sarah Powers. I am now teaching Yin yoga in addition to Hatha. Yin yoga is a gentle but physically challenging practice
that brings you to the mat –literally lying on the mat – to open joints, ligaments, and tendons and your mind. We primarily work the body between the rib cage and knees. You will gain space in your
hips and joints that will free you to feel better in your daily life and physical activities. It is very meditative and sweet. If you know the feeling after having a deep tissue massage, this is how you will feel after
a Yin practice. You will achieve this as you move your body into postures that your teacher guides you into. Then hang out like that for 3 to 5 minutes while your tissue gently stretches. Just breath.
It is never too late to discover yoga and what it can do for you. Or determine if it is not for you. It is a quite a trip. Hope to see you on the mat!
