I’ve been truly blessed in my artistic endeavors in both music and theater, which have amounted to a very unique career and life. And I always credit my acting training for the musician that I am today. But beyond all the training and experiences has been knowing that peace is always there, within us. And it is from knowing this true meaning and purpose of yoga, unity and harmony, that has given beauty, power, and peace to my life.
Swami Vishnudevananda, founder of The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre where I deepened my yoga practice said that, “Health is wealth. Peace of mind is happiness. Yoga shows the way.”
One of the most life changing experiences of my life was spending months, living as a yogi, day in and day out, at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in Woodbourne, New York. Waking up at five o’clock every morning to do asanas (poses), pranayamas (breathing), meditation, and chanting as a family, as One.
There is virtue in coming together to do yoga in a class environment. We get so caught up in our busy lives, and doing the asanas (poses) and pranayama (breathing) together in class gives us a feeling of peace and connectedness. When we say ‘Om’ in class, it reminds us that we really are all One.
Come to class knowing that you have a space where you can let go of all the unnecessary worries, anxiety, and fear that life sometimes offers. And replace those same feelings with positivity and to live in the moment. When we experience detachment and living in the present moment on the mat in class – it’s easier to take that same feeling of detachment and peacefulness back out into the world.
